New Beauty Breakdown! Emily Blunt at the Harper’s Bazaar Woman of the Year Awards

Emily Blunt, Harper’s Bazaar, Woman of the Year

Makeup by Florrie White

English actress Emily Blunt looked spectacular on the red carpet last week at the Harper’s Bazaar Woman of the Year Awards in London. Her makeup artist was none other than MM favourite, Florrie White. Here’s the breakdown of what she used for the soft yet glamorous look:

“Emily Blunt was wearing a dramatic floor length warm orange Alexander McQueen dress with a bejewelled halter neck, and she wanted to keep the make-up simple yet beautiful to work with the dress. So I created a warm make-over focusing on the warmth of the skin and enhancing her beautiful eyes.

She had just come off set from the new action film she is starring in with Tom Cruise where she is playing a very physical part. I cleansed her skin with Decleor Cleansing water and then soothed it with Decleor Life Radiance. Her lips were quenched with Dr. Lipp balm for lips. I then applied Givenchy Acti-Mine primer in Mango over her cheekbones and temples. Over this I evened out her skin tone with Chanel Perfection Lumiere Long Wear foundation, mixing shades 30/40. I then banished any shadows under her eyes with Bobbi Brown Eye Brightener and a little more Bobbi Brown concealer around her nose.

For her eyes I applied Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow in Beach Honey in the inner corner of her eyes, sweeping it across the top lid, up into the crease. I then applied Chantecaille Shine Eye Shade in Rose Quartz mid way across the crease, blending it out to far edges of her eyelid. I also applied this shade over the top lashes, blending it out. I swept Chantecaille’s Rose Gold over the top of the lashline creating a smudged out line giving definition to the eye, I also blended it softly under the lower lashline. I enhanced this soft line by applying Mac Twinks with a very fine slanted brush into the lashline. Eyelashes were curled then accentuated with Stila Forever Your Curl mascara.

Using a large bronzer brush I swept Shiseido Bronzer in 2 from the apples of her cheekbones up to her temples, then dusting over her nose and lightly down over her chin. I also brought this warmth from the bronzer over her forehead and into her hairline creating a really warm glow.

I lined her lips with Revlon lipliner in Nude and then applied Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited lipstick in Beige Darling. The look was set with Sisley Pressed Powder in Transparent Matte.”

New Beauty Breakdown! Rosie Huntington Whiteley in VS magazine

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Photographer Greg Williams | Makeup by Florrie White

I saw this stunning shoot of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley last week in VS magazine, and I had to contact her makeup artist Florrie White, who I used to assist, and find out what she used. Having worked with Rosie, Florrie and Greg Williams at different times, I knew the three of them together would be magic. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Rosie look better – which makes for pretty incredible photos since Rosie is so naturally stunning anyway! Here’s what Florrie used:

“During this shoot the make-up got smokier and sexier, even though Rosie is still the embodiment of sexy without make-up. I generally always prefer the make-up when it has organically evolved throughout the shoot and settled on the face. I think this shot was the last set up of the day, taken overhead, inspired by the infamous shot of Marilyn Monroe in bed shot by Douglas Kirkland.

As always before each makeover I cleansed Rosie’s face with Decleor Aroma Cleanse Water (soon to be re-launched) and moisturised with my favourite product from Decleor, Life Radiance. This cream duo really evens out and soothes the complexion so little foundation or concealer is needed. It gives a glow. I work from my Bobbi Brown foundation palette using a mix of about 5 of the foundation shades along with two or three of the Eye Brighteners so the face isn’t flat in just one shade, and all blemishes are concealed in the right shade.

I filled in Rosie’s eyebrows with Laura Mercier’s eyebrow palette in Ash and Medium Brown. I can’t help mixing colours! I wanted them to be quite strong so they really framed her eyes. I basically brushed the powdered pigment through her natural brow line with a slanted brush, which also teased the hairs up and along.

Eyelashes curled, I played around with two Tom Ford Eye Colour Quads in Golden Mink and Cognac Sable. Firstly I used the palest shade from Golden Mink in the inner corners of the eyes. I then started by using the darkest matte shade from Cognac Sable very close to the top eyelashes, blending up to the socket. I really wanted depth in the eyes. I then mixed the more satin and shimmery shades from both compacts over this base, up to the socket and then slightly winging it out to create a feline and flirtatious shape which would work well for “Come hither” eyes and also work well with all the angles of the camera. I then smudged the same pigments under the eyes, blending them softly down. I love how the sparkly pigments soften the smoky look. I defined the eye further by drawing a line with a very sharpened Bobbi Brown Long Wear Eyeliner in Mahogany over the top lashes, again slightly winged out and also softly smudged into the bottom lashes, not a harsh line. To keep the eye open I applied Laura Mercier eye pencil in Nude into the inner rim of the bottom lash. With eyelashes curled I firstly lengthened the lashes with Sisley Ultra Stretch mascara and then gave them more impact and thickness Sisley Ultra Volume, both in black. I used the tip of the wand of the second mascara to wing out the outer top lashes to enhance the feline shape of the eyeshadow. More of each mascara on the bottom lashes.

Her skin and base were already flawless and dewy but I wanted to create more impact so played with the new illuminators from St. Tropez in Rose and Violet. I applied Violet into the inner socket of the eyes, lightly down the centre of the nose, and along the top of the cheeks and temples. I used the Rose shade over the apples and cheekbones which had already been warmed and contoured with Chanel Soft Glow Blush.

I think Rosie has the most infamous pout which in itself is perfection, so I only wanted to make sure all its beauty was picked up in the lights used on the shoot. After a soothing lick of Dior Rose lip balm, I lined the lips with Burberry Nude Beige – I love the minute silver pigments which really catch the light and enhance any pout. I then lightly dabbed Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in 70 Sourire over her lips with my finger.

To keep the look set and any unwanted shine under control I used a light dusting of Sisley’s translucent powder down her T-zone.”

Florrie’s portfolio can be seen on the D+V website.

New Beauty Breakdown! Salma Hayek on the cover of Lucky magazine

Salma Hayek Lucky Magazine

Makeup by Kay Montano | Photographer – Patrick Demarchalier

I love the cover of the latest Lucky magazine, and makeup artist Kay Montano was chatting to me recently about what products she used on gorgeous actress Salma Hayek. The pictures were shot in Versailles (no less!) by top fashion photographer Patrick Demarchalier. Kay said it was a fantastic shoot as she has worked with both Patrick and Salma for many years – and, well Versailles, you can’t go wrong really.

During the shoot Salma showed Kay some of the products from her new beauty line in the US, Nuance, which Kay says are amazing. She used the Nuance blush in Apricot on Salma as it’s her favourite colour. These are available at CVS in the States.

Here’s what Kay used:

Foundation

  • MyFace MyMix foundation in Med 03
  • YSL Touche Eclat in 03 (Salma loves this for brightening her under eye area)
  • Smashbox Banana powder

 Eyes

  • Chanel Teak eye pencil softly smudged
  •  Chanel Magic Night single eyeshadow over this
  • Chanel Ligne Extreme black eyeliner
  • Chanel Inimitable mascara in Black

Cheeks

  • Nuance Flawless Mineral Cheek Trio in Apricot

Lips

  • Bobbi Brown Blush Lip Liner
  • Bobbi Brown Pink Truffle Pot Rouge (as a lip stain)

New Beauty Breakdown! Rose Byrne at the Pringle show in London

Makeup by Florrie White

I love a bit of Rose Byrne – she is gorgeous, elegant, Australian and grew up in my suburb of Balmain, so I am a bit biased about her. Plus she’s in one of my favourite TV shows, Damages. Here’s a lovely beauty breakdown from LFW, courtesy of her makeup artist, Florrie White.

“Rose Byrne was attending the Pringle show in London on a very sunny Monday during LFW. She was sporting a sleek groomed bob so I wanted to subtly bring out her eyes under her fringe.

Onto clean skin I massaged Decleor Life Radiance and evened out her complexion, banishing any shadows under her eyes and any blemishes by mixing various shades from the Bobbi Brown Foundation palette. I like to mix shades so that the face is not flat.  The make up was set with MAC Prep and Prime powder.

After curling her eyelashes, I applied an even dusting of Chantecaille Rose Quartz all over her upper lid and into the inner corner of her eyes. I blended a soft shading of MAC Mulch into her outer socket to open out her eyes. I then traced a fine soft line of Elizabeth Arden Powder Pencil in Espresso from the top inner corner of her eyes all the way across her lashline. I then accentuated this line using Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner in Caviar Ink from the outer middle of her lashline. Underneath her bottom lashes I applied a softly blended and smudged line in MAC’s Mulch, with the golden pigments really bringing out the colour of her eyes. Laura Mercier’s eye pencil in Nude was used to open out her eye further by applying it into the inner rim of her eye. I then accentuated and extended her lashes with Lancome Hynose Doll’s Eyes mascara in Black. I thickened the lashline further by adding eyelash clusters in Medium from the inner corner of her eyes to midway across her eyelash and then continued in Long lashes to the outer edges of the lashline.

She was literally given a soft spring glow with Chanel’s Blush Horizon/Soft Glow Blush on the apples of her eyes and up into her temples.

I lined her lips in Burberry Lipliner in Nude Beige which I feels really pumps up the shape of one’s mouth with the silver pigments in it. I then filled in her mouth with Chanel’s Rouge Coco in Chintz.”

New Beauty Breakdown! Kate Bosworth at the Burberry Prorsum Show, London

Kate Bosworth, Burberry, London Fashion Week

Makeup by Florrie White
All products by Burberry Beauty

When I saw how gorgeous Kate Bosworth looked at last week’s Burberry show at London fashion Week, I had to find out her makeup look. Luckily I know her makeup artist, Florrie White as I used to assist her in London, so Florrie gave me the info on what she used – and now I REALLY have my eyes on some of those yummy Burberry eyeshadows…

“Kate was very relaxed about her make up and let me work to create the “best version of yourself” make up. Kate has a healthy warm Californian skin tone which I evened out with Sheer Foundation in Trench no. 3 and 4, using the lighter shade to even out the complexion and the darker shade to add a little contour over her features. I banished any shadows under and in the inner sockets of her eyes with Sheer Concealer in Light and Soft Beige.

I didn’t need to touch her perfect eyebrows so I concentrated on subtly shading her eyelids with sheer Shadow in Gold Trench all over her lids and then more definition in the outer socket of her eye and under her lower lashes in Chestnut. I brought out her lash more by smudging Eye Definer in Midnight Brown into her
lower lashes then enhanced her top lashes with a soft but solid line across her top lashes. I curled her lashes and then applied 3 coats of mascara in Midnight Black, combing through the lashes afterwards.

A further warm and sunny glow was achieved by applying Fresh Glow to highlight her temples and top of her cheeks and then I swept Warm Glow in Copper Glow over the apples of her cheeks, across the bridge of her nose and over her forehead into her hairline.

I highlighted her Cupid’s bow with Lip Definer in Nude Beige and also on the bottom outer edge of her mouth and the filled it in with a creamy layer of lipstick in Nude Beige.”
