Gina Brooke for Intraceuticals

Gina BrookeI had heard whispers about this amazing skin treatment for a while, a treatment that firms the skin and gives it that radiant glow that you get if you’re a newborn, or a celebrity. Then when I heard Madonna’s makeup artist, Gina Brooke, was in town with her role as Brand Ambassador for that amazing oxygen facial, I had to find out more. I have long been an admirer of Gina’s work, so I was completely intrigued to meet her in person.

Gina’s work speaks for itself – she has worked with Madonna now for a number of years, creating her latest iconic looks from her Reinvention Tour in 2003 to Hard Candy in 2008. Now in between working with Madonna she is booked solidly around the world handling big campaigns and other celebrity clientele (the day I saw her, she was about to fly out and give David Beckham a touch of the Gina Brooke magic).

Part of her magic is the new Australian treatment, called Intraceuticals, for which she is Brand Ambassador. And the reason why she’s Brand Ambassador? Because it works. After she started using the treatment on jobs, her bookings went through the roof. Ad campaigns, beauty campaigns, other A-listers – everyone wanted to try this new miracle treatment that makes your skin look like it’s had new life literally breathed into it.

Intraceuticals Infusion is a beauty treatment unlike any other that uses therapeutic grade oxygen and Hyaluronic Acid, an ingredient naturally found in the skin, to deliver specialized active serums to the skin. It makes skin noticeably brighter, firmer and tighter, lifting and sculpting and improving the surface so that makeup glides on. After my treatment I couldn’t stop looking at myself (not my usual M.O), and I’ve been raving about it to anyone who will listen (and when you tell them it’s Madonna’s skin secret, believe me, people are interested!)

In addition to the salon-based facials, there is now an at-home range of products that build on the same principles of hyaluronic layering. They can be used either in conjunction with their facials or at home on their own as a skincare regime. What I love about the treatment is that it’s non-invasive (no needles, no fillers), but gives results that you very rarely get without a more aggressive approach. All the ingredients are the finest grade possible, and it mixes the frontier of modern science with natural ingredients like Vitamins A and C, aloe vera and green tea.

I also really like that makeup can be applied straight away – there is no downtime, and your skin looks amazing as soon as the facial is finished, and makeup goes on like a dream. I’m definitely going to be carrying the products in my kit to deal with clients who have skin that needs a little something. The only drawback for me was that it doesn’t contain SPF, but with specialized treatments like this one it can be very difficult to synthesise the SPF into it so both the SPF and the active ingredients are working effectively. And it’s just a matter of applying a good sunscreen under your makeup – something everyone should be doing as a matter of course!

People with eczema, rosacea and acne can all benefit from it as it reduces the capillaries and drastically improves the texture. So many facials mean you have to be locked away like The Bride of Frankenstein until your skin subsides, but I was able to be photographed next to Gina, who has to be one of the world’s most gorgeous women, makeup-free straight after my treatment, and feel confident I wouldn’t scare the children.

In person, Gina Brooke is impossibly gorgeous – so flawless and perfect she almost doesn’t look real. Huge blue-green eyes (not unlike a certain client of hers!), lashes for days and skin – well, let’s just say the treatment speaks for itself. And she’s NICE. Sometimes when you meet someone of her stature, with an A-list clientele, they aren’t that nice – but she makes you feel like the only person in the room.

I consider her one of the beauty mavericks, in that she is always seeking solutions for how to improve her work. About 6 years ago she was wanting to improve the texture of client’s skin so that makeup went on smoother, and looked more flawless. But it had to be immediate. A friend told her about a new Australian oxygen skin treatment, and once she tried it, she was hooked. So was Madonna when Gina introduced her. And now other celebrities like Naomi Campbell, Anne Hathaway and Eva Longoria use it before their big appearances to give them red carpet results.

Best. Concealer. Ever.: Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage

Best Concealer Ever: Laura Mercier CamouflageI can’t believe I’ve been blogging for well over a year now, and I haven’t  mentioned this trusty little helper that comes on literally every job. It’s almost as if because it’s there, just when I need it for dark circles and nasty red spots, I don’t even think about it. All these other concealers step in and steal its limelight, when really, it’s the star of the show.

It’s super thick and dense (so great for spots and blemishes), and each colour has two pans of product, one more yellow-y skin coloured one and a peach, so it can be mixed up to just the right shade. The peachier tone is perfect for concealing under-eye darkness – let’s be honest, the scourge of women everywhere.

But the trick is, you need to know how to use it. You need a brush – the Laura Mercier concealer one is pretty good, and then use the brush to mix the colours up the right way on the back of your hand. Then apply with feathering motions (or dabbing motions if it’s a spot) onto the offending area. It can be sheered out or coverage built up until all imperfections just melt away under its tender ministrations.

For under eye circles it really is usually too thick, so I generally put a bit of basic moisturiser on the back of my hand (Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturiser is a favourite for this task), and dip a tiny bit on the brush, then onto the product. The moisturiser breaks it up slightly so you get sheerer coverage. Laura Mercier also makes a Secret Concealer which is more peach-y, and more emollient which I sometimes mix in too. And LM Secret Camo (for it is Secret Camo, and I am Australian, and I will abbreviate things even when it’s not appropriate) can be layered under other products too, for even more superior eyebag coverage.

It comes in 6 shades from really quite pale to reasonably deep tones, although if you are extremely pale or very dark I would stick with Becca as they have a wider selection of colours to choose from.

All in all it is my go-to concealer guy, and I owe it a major apology for not covering it sooner. I may even buy it a drink.

The Interview – Kabuki

Lady Gaga - KabukiKabuki is something of a legend in the fashion industry, having risen so rapidly up through the ranks of top makeup artists to reach the level he is now in just a few short years. He is Ms Kylie Minogue’s makeup artist and is currently travelling with her (having just wrapped Paris Fashion Week!) and within the business he is renowned for being a ‘makeup artist’s makeup artist.’ Born in London and based in New York, Kabuki has worked with some seriously major names, beginning with the first two series of Sex and the City (and if you don’t remember changing your makeup routine to emulate Carrie Bradshaw’s noughties gorgeousness, you must have been living in a yurt in Tibet). Since then he has created memorable looks for Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani and Madonna, and is still a regular contributor to Italian Vogue as well as US Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Allure and Numero.

His incredible use of colour and theatrical take on fantasy make his work both opulent and unmissable, but he can also create an understated modern beauty look for clients like Gwyneth Paltrow when required. He has recently been appointed the Creative Director of myface.cosmetics (one of MM’s favourite brands!)

I was very lucky to get a moment with him. Here is his interview:

1 – What are you working on at the moment?

I just finished shows for New York and Paris fashion week so first on my list of things to do:  regain sanity. I’m working on my paintings in my upstate New York home while my agent fills in my schedule for the winter.

2 – Favorite makeup job ever?

Michael Jackson. He was lovely to be around and we had some great conversations about the legendary people he knew. Sadly, the Matthew Rolston and Bruce Weber shoots with him turned out to be the final shoots he ever did.

4 – Best Makeup tip ever

Apply your makeup at a table so you can rest your elbows and have a steady hand. Make sure you have enough light to see properly. If you make mistakes, clear them with pointed Q-tips dipped in a non-oily remover, such as Crealine.  Even if you’re wearing just a little makeup, it looks bad if it’s not cleanly applied. Not the most exciting answer but, honestly, it will improve your result more than anything else I could tell you.

4 – How did you get started in the business?

I wasn’t unknown in the New York City club scene of the 1990’s so I was on designer/stylist Patricia Field ‘s radar. She plucked me out of the crowd to paint Sarah Jessica Parker’s face for a new TV show called SEX AND THE CITY. Then I worked on some movies, including PARTY MONSTER. Then Steven Klein saw that and called me for an Italian Vogue shoot. Then Madonna saw the Italian Vogue shoot and called.  And the ball was officially rolling.

5 – How is it different to when you started?

The longer you’re around, the more relationships you acquire. In the beginning, I think maybe some people were unsure about me for whatever reason: maybe my name sounded odd, maybe some of my over-the-top looks made them nervous. But after they meet me and work with me, they know I’m professional and just there to create a beautiful make-up that fits within their context.

Kylie - Makeup by Kabuki

6 – What do you do in your spare time?

Drawing and painting mostly.  I always bring a sketchbook and mechanical pencil with me when I travel, and I travel pretty often.

7 – What are your favorite looks for the coming Autumn/Winter season?

I like the trend towards more bold and glamorous make-up for the coming season that I’ve seen at the shows.  Clean and fresh is nice too, but nothing says “glamour” and “sexy” like a strong makeup look.

It’s a rockin’ London eye, fabulously cool makeup artist Hannah Murray (who is the Creative Director for Topshop makeup) is on beauty duty, and they have one of my favourite singers, Sia, providing the tunes. All r-i-i-i-ight.

The Interview – Lee Pycroft

London-based Lee Pycroft has been working as a celebrity makeup artist for over fifteen years, and her work can be seen on countless red carpets and magazine covers. She has worked with celebrities like Naomi Watts, Sienna Miller, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Biel, Diane Kruger and Elle McPherson, to name a few. She has worked for British Vogue, Grazia, GQ, Esquire Glamour, Tatler and ELLE, always giving her makeup a signature strong, sexy feel that remains polished and feminine. I assisted Lee in London and not only is she a lovely person, I like that she is able to take her incredible red carpet work and translate it for every day women, which is a skill in itself. Without further ado, I give you, The Interview.
Sienna Miller - Lee Pycroft Makeup 1) What are you working on at the moment?

I have just finished working on the live final of Britain’s Next Top Model which aired this week. There were several make up changes to be made in very little time so I worked on themes that will delivered impact but allowed for quick changes! I just did the Richard Sorger show at London Fashion Week and am prepping for a beauty story that is coming up.

2) Favourite makeup job ever?

My favourite make up job ever was also sprinkled with a touch of luxury too!
I travelled through the night to Las Vegas on a private jet to do the make up for an actress who was receiving a life time achievement award. Her look got a lot of press and the job was lucrative and fun.

Diane Kruger - Lee Pycroft Makeup 3) Top 5 products?

  • Chanel Pro Lumiere Foundation
  • Chanel Inimitible Mascara
  • Mac Mineralise Pressed Powder
  • Bobbi Brown Gel Liner
  • Lancome Long Lasting Softening Concealer

4) Best makeup tip ever?

Keep your eyes on mass market brands as they are swiftly catching up to the prestige brands in terms of technology and textures. If you shop around a little you can pull together an impressive selection of inexpensive products that will deliver impressive results…. watch this space!

5) How did you get started in the business?

I started by doing a basic make up course then writing to all the photographers I could find and asking if I could test with them. My letter was enthusiastic and I got lots of calls back! I then met other more established make up artists who allowed me to help them, for free. This gave me priceless experience and I made contacts too. I always think half of my success has come from being relentless in my attempts to establish myself, a positive attitude and whatever periods of great success I have had, always being grateful for what has come my way…

Cate Blanchet - Lee Pycroft Makeup 6) How is it different to when you started?

There are far more people in the business now but my position is easier as I am so much more established!

7) What do you love doing in your spare time?

I love doing motivational courses! Anything that stretches the mind and spirit; I love hitting the road alone or with loved ones and finding random places to stay, going walking by the river, anything that feeds the spirit and creates memories…. as you never know when you might be creating your last one…

8) What are your favourite looks for the coming Autumn/Winter season?

I love the silky tobacco stained eyes with khol inside at Gucci and the reckless looking dark eyes at Zac Posen.

As always I am absolutely blown away by her incredible attention to detail and her way she manages to encapsulate a designer’s vision on the smallest of surfaces – a nail! Here’s what the glossy syrup-y nail she created for Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton. Sophy Robson Nails for Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton show
Sophy Robson Nails for Chanel - Paris Fashion Week Also she watched the Chanel show and had this exclusive peek at the new Chanel nail colour, apparently called Black Pearl. Mmmm, new Chanel nail colours….
PS -Thanks all for bearing with me whilst I had a much-needed holiday this week. I’m now back (with a slight tan, thank you very much!) and ready to get right back into the wonderful world of makeup.

Stop Press! Discount YSL Touche Eclat!

Yves-Saint-Laurent Touche EclatYes, you heard that right – YSL’s miracle concealer wand is now cheaper – but only in Australia. It is now down in price from AUSD $78 to $55, in order to bring it into line with European and US prices for Touche Eclat.

That is exciting news not just for Touche Eclat afficianados but also for luxury cosmetics in Australia, as I hope it heralds a shift where we don’t pay quite such exorbitant amounts for makeup in Australia. I nearly passed out the first time I bought makeup back in Sydney – $78 for a blush (which is about £47). Much more expensive than the UK. This doesn’t stop Australian women from being some of the biggest cosmetics consumers on the planet, so I think it’s wonderful that YSL in Australia have recognised this discrepancy in pricing and moved to rectify it. Nasty dark eye circles rejoice and begone!

And whilst I’m at it, it has been brought to my attention that YSL now have a new shade, Number 8, which is a lemon coloured Touche Eclat. This is exciting as it really is the shade that was missing from the range (and for which I have been substituting Clinique Airbrush in my kit instead for a number of years). Number 8 was created for the Asian market so I’m not sure if it’s available in Europe, however it now means that Touche Eclat is a much more comprehensive concealer range covering pretty much everyone – darker skintones, Asian skintones, and of course, Caucasian (I usually mix number 2 and 3 for most of my fair complected clients.)
